Donald Trump was hit with a two-word heckle during a speech at the Presidents Cup golf tournament at the Medinah course in Illinois. A spectator shouted “you suck” from the grandstands while the US President was speaking.
Trump received a mix of boos and cheers from the crowd at the event. He appeared largely unbothered by, or perhaps unaware of, the heckle and continued his remarks without acknowledging it.
Trump's Response to the Reception
After being introduced by PGA Tour Chief Executive Brian Rolapp, Trump addressed reports of a poor reception. He said: “You know the fake news media will say I got a very bad reception, but we got a very good reception, they love what we're doing...”
It was at this point that the heckler made their opinion clear. Trump carried on, saying: “Brian said, 'Could you make a short speech?' And I said, 'No, I don't have the courage to make a speech. These people want to see golf; they don't want to hear speeches.' I'll only say this: Our country is doing great, better than ever before.”
Online Reactions and Prior Booing
Online, several users celebrated Trump's reaction, while others mocked the reception he received. One user wrote: “You have to suck pretty bad to get this many boo’s at a golf tournament as a Republican”, while another posted: “If this guy actually yelled that I want to buy him a beer!”
A Trump fan disagreed with the perception of a bad reception, saying: “Golfers and Golf fans love him”. The mixed reception came less than 24 hours after Trump was booed during a college American football match between Tennessee and Texas.
