Donald Trump has launched a furious outburst after not being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, insisting he "settled 8 wars" and is "close to ending or settling two more".
Navi Pillay, a South African-born jurist and former UN human rights chief, won the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday for efforts that the award committee said promoted international law as it comes under attack. Her career has spanned from defending the rights of an imprisoned Nelson Mandela to leading a panel that found that Israel committed genocide in Gaza.
High-profile rebuke
Her win was seen as a high-profile rebuke to US President Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who have both rejected the findings of the UN commission she led on Gaza. The leaders also have been highly critical of the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Court, at both of which Pillay has worked.
Hours after the award was announced in Norway, the Trump administration imposed sweeping new sanctions on the International Criminal Court as part of its campaign to dismantle the tribunal over investigations into the United States and its allies, including Israel.
Trump's Truth Social post
In a new post on his Truth Social platform, the 80-year-old US President launched a furious attack over not winning the Nobel Peace Prize. He wrote: "I settled 8 WARS, am close to ending or settling 2 more, got all of the Israeli hostages back, including the final 28, both living and dead, had hundreds of hostages, from countries all over the World, released and sent back home, won a war in Venezuela, and captured the violent dictator who so viciously ran that country, and stopped the number one state sponsor of terror, the Islamic Republic of Iran, from obtaining a Nuclear Weapon — AND MUCH MORE!"
"Yet, with all of that I, or the United States of America, did not get the Noble Peace Prize. WOW!"
This is a breaking story. More to follow.
