Woman Uses TikTok and Podcast to Seek Justice for Mother's 1993 Murder
TikTok and Podcast Used to Seek Justice for 1993 Murder

Nikki Wasilishin was just 10 years old when her mother was murdered in their family home in Sedona, Arizona, on July 9, 1993. Decades later, she has turned to TikTok and a podcast to seek answers and pressure authorities. Her three-year-old sister's repeated cries of 'Papi killed mommy!' that night have haunted her for years.

The Night of the Murder

Stephanie 'Stacy' Wasilishin, 32, was shot after a fight with her longtime boyfriend Russell Peterson. Authorities ruled it a homicide, but no one was ever charged. Peterson has not responded to requests for comment. Nikki recalls a perfect evening playing in the garden before her mother was killed around 1:15 a.m. Peterson called 911 at 1:40 a.m., claiming Stacy might have shot herself or that a struggle occurred. The Maricopa County Medical Examiner ruled it a homicide due to gunpowder residue on Stacy's non-dominant left hand, suggesting a defensive posture.

Investigative Challenges

Peterson's account shifted over multiple interviews, and he declined a polygraph and reenactment. Prosecutors declined to file charges in 1993, citing insufficient evidence. In 2020, Sedona Police Sgt. Laura Leon revived the cold case but struggled to find leads. Leon retired in 2024, stalling the case further.

Turning to Social Media

Following advice from friend Sarah Turney, who advocated for her sister's case, Nikki launched a TikTok account and the podcast 'Papi Killed Mommy' in July 2025. The podcast uses the case file, including Peterson's statements and the 911 call. Nikki aims for 'justice in the court of public opinion' if not in law.

Current Efforts

In February 2026, Nikki met with the Yavapai County Attorney's Office, which indicated the case needs a confession or recorded confrontation call. The Sedona Police Department says the case is not active. Nikki continues to speak out, hoping someone with information will come forward.
