Stefanovic Defends Neurosurgeon Charlie Teo with Expletive

Karl Stefanovic has fiercely defended controversial neurosurgeon Charlie Teo, telling critics to 'leave him the f*** alone' while continuing to promote the doctor. The Nine Entertainment star, who apologised to colleagues in 2022 for supporting Teo, now says he still backs the under-siege brain surgeon.

Teo's Controversial Career

Charlie Teo was once applauded for taking on high-risk brain tumour patients, but in 2023 he faced extreme practice restrictions due to unprofessional behaviour. This stemmed from two patient deaths, questions over whether the benefits of surgeries outweighed risks, and whether proper consent was given. Teo now practices overseas, particularly in China.

Media Watch Investigation

ABC's Media Watch highlighted Teo's case on Monday, noting his close ties with a News Corp journalist and Stefanovic. In response, Stefanovic sent a curt email to Daily Mail, stating: 'Charlie Teo is a great f***ing Australian. Leave him the f*** alone.'

Teo appeared on Stefanovic's podcast in March, where they briefly discussed his controversies without delving into why he was barred from practicing. Media Watch host Linton Besser said the podcast glossed over Teo's sanctions. Instead, the episode framed Teo as unfairly targeted by zealous red tape.

Stefanovic asked Teo: 'How did you get through it, the dramas?' Teo replied: 'I don't want to focus on that because it is incredibly negative... If you're a good person, if you've taken the high road, if you treat your patients well, then you can stand proud.'

Stefanovic's Defence

Stefanovic is a close friend and ambassador for Teo's foundation. In 2022, Teo faced criticism from Nine-owned outlets like 60 Minutes, The Age, and The Sydney Morning Herald, highlighting severe physical tolls and high costs for patients. Stefanovic defended him then, saying: 'I adore him... The pile-on with Charlie is very difficult to watch.' He later apologised to Nine colleagues for those comments.

Media Watch host Linton Besser criticised the bias in favour of Teo, despite misconduct severe enough for the Medical Council of NSW to reprimand him. In response to Stefanovic's expletive statement, Besser said: 'Karl, it's not Teo we're worried about.'
