Sky News paused its morning broadcast on Thursday to deliver a breaking news update from Downing Street. Presenters Sophy Ridge and Wilfred Frost, hosting Mornings with Ridge and Frost, interrupted the show to reveal that Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer will issue a formal apology on behalf of the state to survivors of historic forced adoptions in England.
PM to Apologise for Forced Adoption Scandal
Frost announced: "We've just learnt that the Prime Minister will make a formal apology on behalf of the state to all of those who have been affected by historic forced adoptions in England." The apology follows decades of campaigning by victims and advocates.
Between 1949 and 1976, an estimated 185,000 babies were taken from unmarried mothers and placed for adoption in England and Wales. The Government has now acknowledged the scandal and will express regret later today.
Campaigner Responds to Apology
Ann Keen, a former Labour MP and campaigner, said she looked forward to "being released from my shame" when Starmer delivers the apology. Political correspondent Alexandra Rogers joined the show to discuss the development in detail.
This is a breaking story; updates will follow as more information becomes available.
