US Singer's Whirlwind Romance Ends in Divorce Demand

American singer-songwriter Brittany Porter is demanding a proper divorce after claiming she unknowingly married a Malaysian sultan during what she believed was merely an engagement celebration. The 30-year-old artist, who performs under the name Brook Lynn, revealed the extraordinary situation to media outlets, explaining she had no idea the religious ceremony constituted a legally binding Islamic marriage.

A Fairytale Beginning Turns Sour

Porter first encountered Sultan Muhammad V of Kelantan, the former King of Malaysia, in January 2024 through mutual friends. She described an immediate connection, particularly drawn to his British accent. Their friendship quickly blossomed into a whirlwind romance characterised by extravagant global travel and lavish gifts. "He flew me and my friends all around the world," Porter claimed. "He was so generous, the nicest hotels, giving my friends the best treatment, experiences and gifts."

The Sultan proposed before their first overseas trip to the Middle East in April 2024, presenting Porter with a blue diamond to match her eyes. During their time in Oman, Muhammad V arranged for her friends to fly out for a religious ceremony. "In my culture, the big ceremony is a wedding, which we planned for January 2025," she explained. "So I was confused. They brought an imam out and I did the whole conversion."

The Shocking Discovery and Sudden Silence

Porter only later discovered that the nikah ceremony constituted a marriage under Islamic law. She clarified on social media: "In Western culture, the ceremony itself is considered the official wedding, so I didn't realise how different the terminology and process would be under Islamic law. But the truth is - I was, and still am, his wife in the eyes of Allah."

Upon returning to Malaysia, Porter claimed she was expected to produce a male heir. She eventually became pregnant but suffered a miscarriage, after which their relationship deteriorated significantly. Despite continuing with wedding planning, the California native returned to Malaysia to find the Sultan absent. "He blocked me on everything," she alleged. "He just texted my best friend saying it wasn't going to work out." She hasn't heard from him since.

Moving Forward Through Music

Muhammad V has been the 29th Sultan of Kelantan since 2010 and served as Malaysia's king from 2016 until his abrupt abdication in 2019. This represents his fourth marriage, following unions with Tengku Zubaidah binti Tengku Norudin, Sultanah Nur Diana Petra, and Russian beauty queen Oxana Andreevna Voevodina.

Despite the traumatic experience, Porter has channelled her emotions into her debut single "Oh My Gosh". "It's been amazing, it's been a healing journey for me, and really freeing," she told the Daily Mail. "I am grateful for everything that happened at the end because the songs are about him." The singer now seeks formal dissolution of a marriage she never realised she had entered.
