American singer-songwriter Brittany Porter, who performs under the name Brook Lynn, is seeking a “proper divorce” after claiming she unwittingly married Sultan Muhammad V of Kelantan, the former King of Malaysia. The 30-year-old California native told the South China Post that she met the sultan in January 2024 through mutual friends and felt an “instant chemistry.”
Porter said the sultan, 56, proposed before their first overseas trip to Oman in April 2024, giving her a blue diamond ring to match her eyes. She alleged that while in Oman, a religious ceremony took place involving an imam, during which she converted to Islam. Porter said she believed this was merely an engagement celebration, not a wedding, as she had planned a larger ceremony for January 2025. She later learned that under Islamic law, the nikah ceremony constitutes a legal marriage.
After returning to Malaysia, Porter claimed she was expected to produce a male heir. She said she became pregnant but suffered a miscarriage, after which the couple began arguing frequently. She continued planning a Western wedding, but the sultan allegedly became distant, blocked her on all platforms, and sent a message to her best friend saying the relationship was over.
Porter has not heard from him since and is now seeking a divorce. She described the experience as traumatic but said it inspired her debut single, “Oh My Gosh,” which she called a healing journey. Sultan Muhammad V has been married three times previously, including to a Russian beauty queen in 2018, from whom he divorced a year later.
