Nick Reiner, the 32-year-old son of Hollywood icon Rob Reiner, appeared in a Los Angeles courtroom on Wednesday, facing charges for the brutal stabbing deaths of his parents. Looking pale and anxious, he sat handcuffed before Superior Court Judge Sam Ohta, wearing a yellow jail top and blue pants, with his hair cropped short.
Charges and Plea
Reiner has pleaded not guilty to six felony charges, including two counts of first-degree murder, two special circumstance allegations of multiple murder, and two counts of using a deadly weapon—a knife. Prosecutors allege that on December 14, he killed his father, Rob Reiner, and mother, Michele Reiner, at their $13.5 million home in upscale Brentwood, Los Angeles, inflicting multiple stab wounds before fleeing.
Court Proceedings
During the hearing, Reiner appeared confused when Judge Ohta asked if he agreed to postpone the case until September. After whispered advice from his public defender, Kimberly Greene, he softly replied, “yes.” The next hearing is set for September 15, when a date for a preliminary hearing will be scheduled. Greene stated she is still awaiting discovery evidence from prosecutors, while Deputy District Attorney Jonathan Chong noted they are waiting for autopsy reports.
Death Penalty Possibility
Los Angeles District Attorney Nathan Hochman has indicated that the death penalty is a potential punishment if Reiner is convicted. “This case is a death penalty eligible case,” Hochman said. “We take the process extremely seriously and will consider all mitigating and aggravating circumstances.”
Family Grief
Nick’s older brother, Jake Reiner, 34, shared his anguish in a Substack essay, describing the moment his sister Romy, 28, delivered the devastating news. “I was robbed of so many things that day,” Jake wrote. “My parents won’t be at my wedding, they won’t get to hold their future grandchild.” He expressed horror at learning his brother was the alleged murderer, stating, “We lost more than half of our family that night in the most violent way imaginable.” Jake paid tribute to his parents, calling them “the center of my life” and “the most giving people I have ever known.” He said he would trade every privilege for one more hour with them.
Nick Reiner, who has a history of mental health issues, remains in custody without bail. The case continues to unfold as the family mourns their loss.
