The showrunner of The Boys has disclosed the unexpected reason why Dominique McElligott's character Queen Maeve did not appear in the series finale, clarifying that it was not due to a lack of effort. McElligott, aged 40, featured in the initial three seasons of the superhero series as the feminist heroine who endures an explosion but stages her own death to flee Vought, the corrupt superhero conglomerate, and its leader Homelander, portrayed by Antony Starr.
Queen Maeve's appearances diminished after 2022, sparking speculation regarding her departure. Now, following the Irish actor's absence from the Amazon series' conclusion, show creator Eric Kripke revealed that he was receptive to her return for the finale, but McElligott informed him that she had retired.
“Dom and I exchange emails a few times every six to eight months or so, and she checked in on me after the Palisades fires,” Kripke told TV Insider in an interview published on Wednesday. “We correspond via email, and I asked early on because I needed to know whether we should plan for it, ‘Would you be open to returning for a single day? Here are the dates.’”
He added, “It was very amicable and respectful. She simply said, ‘I’ve essentially retired from acting. I’m not really acting anymore, and I’m occupied on those dates anyway.’”
Kripke emphasised that there were no ill feelings involved. “So, that was genuinely it. It was a very pleasant, uncontroversial moment, you know?” he said.
McElligott did not immediately respond to The Independent’s request for comment.
The Boys is the most recent project listed on McElligott’s IMDb page. Prior to her role in the superhero show, she appeared in other television series such as House of Cards and The Astronaut Wives Club.
Although McElligott has not appeared in The Boys since the third season finale, she was featured in recap clips and referenced throughout the show’s conclusion. “We wanted to pay tribute to her; she is an important character, so she appears in the recap and in a way to show that Maeve passed the torch to Annie [the superhero Starlight, played by Erin Moriarty], and now Annie is passing the torch to Marie, establishing a lineage of strong women that began with Maeve,” Kripke said. “We aimed to invoke Maeve’s spirit if we could not bring her in person.”
