A chaotic brawl broke out during a kindergarten graduation ceremony at Queen of Apostles School in Toledo, Ohio, after a seating dispute escalated into violence. The incident occurred on Thursday morning, leaving one parent injured and another facing felony charges.
Seating Dispute Sparks Confrontation
Craig Mays, a parent attending the ceremony, said the altercation began when a family moved chairs to create their own seating area, blocking the view of his daughter's mother. Jessica Anderson, 28, who was seated behind them, allegedly began cursing and insulting the family. 'She just talking, just cussing, talking crazy,' Mays told local media. 'Calling us weird and saying we need to mind our business.'
The argument quickly turned physical. Mays said Anderson's family of ten—five men and five women in the first two rows—attacked them. 'I literally don't remember anything,' Mays said. 'I just know I was sucker punched.' He claimed a group of four or five men kicked him in the head while he was on the ground, prompting his daughter's mother to intervene.
Violence Escalates
Mays recounted that Anderson grabbed his daughter's mother by the hair, pulled her away, and punched her face. 'Then maybe five or six other girls came and trampled her and were just stomping her, kicking her in the face,' he added. Video footage showed the group of fighting parents falling over chairs and spilling onto the gym floor.
Anderson was arrested and charged with felonious assault, then taken to the Lucas County Jail. According to an affidavit, she allegedly caused 'serious injury' by grabbing a victim's hair and striking her head against a chair. The victim required staples in her head at the hospital. As of Friday, no other individuals had been charged, despite multiple adults being involved in the brawl.
Impact on Families and School
Mays, a kindergarten teacher himself, expressed heartbreak over missing his daughter's graduation. 'I know how hard those kids work and how hard those teachers work for us just to ruin it and be selfish like that,' he said. He is considering pulling his daughter out of the school. The mother of his daughter was treated at the emergency room for injuries including staples in her head, bleeding, and damage to her wrist and knees.
The Queen of Apostles School, a Catholic institution with about 120 students, serves the Hispanic population of its neighborhood. In a Facebook post, the school expressed gratitude for the rapid response of Toledo police, stating that all students were safe and the last day of school continued as usual.
Anderson was released on her own recognizance on Friday and placed under house arrest. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for June 10 in Toledo Municipal Court. The Daily Mail has sought comment from the school, police, and Anderson.
