Richard Madeley clashed with business minister Chris McDonald on Good Morning Britain, warning of a "PR nightmare" for the Labour Government over its early prisoner release scheme.
Clash over prisoner release scheme
During the interview on Monday, Madeley told McDonald: "The PR nightmare for you is coming down the tracks, isn't it?" The minister responded: "Richard! No hang on!" before declaring: "I'm not concerned about PR, I'm concerned about prisoner safety and the safety of the general public."
Madeley attempted to explain his point, saying: "If you let me pose the question. Perhaps you should be [concerned], because in the next few weeks or months, we're going to begin to see these early releases, and we're going to see some very unpleasant men being put out on the pavement to go about their business. We're going to see the release, as things stand, of the killers of PC Harper; we're going to see that on camera."
Public backlash warning
He continued: "Now, when I refer to PR, what I mean is, you're going to get a PR backlash like you will not recognise when it actually starts to happen, and when it stops being a prospect, which there's still time to reverse. When it actually happens, there's going to be a massive, overwhelming backlash against it, that's what I mean."
McDonald fired back: "The government is not making decisions on prisons and prisoner releases based on PR. This isn't about public relations, this is about making the right decisions for justice, for victims, for the safety of the general public." He also blamed previous Conservative governments for failing to take the prison crisis seriously.
Minister's response
McDonald assured: "I'm not remotely thinking about the PR of this, and I'm absolutely certain the Prime Minister isn't either. It's a really awful position to be in, and I can tell you public relations is at the bottom of the list."
Co-host Kate Garraway then intervened, clarifying: "I don't think Richard meant public relations in terms of press, I think he meant that you're going to feel the force of people's anger," before steering the conversation to Andy Burnham's cost of living tour, which begins on Monday.
