Several LIV Golf players have reportedly made early moves to explore a possible return to the PGA Tour, as the future of the breakaway league faces significant uncertainty. According to reports, the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia (PIF) may withdraw its funding at the end of the current season, prompting players to seek alternatives.
Uncertain Future for LIV Golf
A Wall Street Journal report this week claimed that PIF will cease funding the league after the 2025 season. An official announcement on LIV Golf's future is expected imminently, following weeks of speculation. The league, which launched in 2022, attracted several high-profile players from the PGA Tour and DP World Tour, including Bryson DeChambeau, Jon Rahm, and Phil Mickelson. Their futures are now in question.
Players Explore Return to PGA Tour
An ESPN report has revealed that agents representing multiple unnamed LIV players have approached the PGA Tour regarding the possibility of rejoining. The PGA Tour had previously offered a Returning Member Program earlier this year, which allowed Brooks Koepka and Patrick Reed to return, albeit with significant financial penalties. Koepka has already resumed playing on the PGA Tour, while Reed is serving a ban that will end in August.
LIV Golf CEO Scott O'Neil recently stated in a leaked email to staff that he expects the 2026 season to proceed "as planned." He emphasized that the league's schedule remains uninterrupted and that the organization is focused on delivering compelling events. "We are heading into the heart of our 2026 schedule with the full energy of an organisation that is bigger, louder, and more influential than ever before," O'Neil wrote.
The situation remains fluid, with further developments expected as the announcement on LIV Golf's future approaches.
