In the run-up to the Met Gala, speculation usually centers on the outfits of pop icons like Beyoncé or Rihanna. But this year, all eyes were on a different kind of cultural figure: Lauren Sanchez Bezos, the 56-year-old wife of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. The attention was inevitable when the couple reportedly paid $10 million to sponsor the event, prompting protests projecting slogans like "If You Can Buy The Met Gala, You Can Pay More Taxes" onto the Empire State Building. Activists also placed around 300 bottles of fake urine inside the Met Museum, referencing Amazon workers' claims of being forced to urinate in bottles (denied by the company).
A Disappointing Gown
When Sanchez Bezos stepped onto the Met steps, expectations were high. However, her navy satin Schiaparelli gown, with its plunging neckline, was described as dull—reminiscent of a prom dress. The look was an homage to John Singer Sargent's portrait "Madame X," perhaps a comment on the controversy surrounding her husband's involvement. But the dress felt empty, a symbol of the "Tech Gala" where money fails to buy real cultural cachet.
The Backlash
The couple's sponsorship sparked swift backlash. Social media joked about attendees ordering outfits via Amazon Prime. Commentator Matt Bernstein said, "This dress is perfect for her because she is none of those things [inventive, creative, boundary-breaking]." The New York Times called the gala "the perfect laundromat for soulless tech money," and Sanchez Bezos is its ideal figurehead.
Desperate for Cultural Relevance
Tech titans like Bezos are no longer satisfied with wealth; they crave cultural relevance. Sanchez Bezos has hired "image architect" Law Roach, appeared in Vogue, and sat front row at Paris Fashion Week. Yet, her efforts seem hollow. In a dissonant moment, she posed at Paris Fashion Week as Amazon announced 16,000 job cuts. While Anna Wintour backs her, other fashion players like Lauren Santo Domingo and designers Jonathan Anderson and Nicolas Ghesquiere were absent from the Met Gala. Model Bella Hadid reportedly liked a post criticizing Bezos's involvement.
Can't Buy Cool
The Bezoses were even parodied in The Devil Wears Prada 2, where Justin Theroux plays a billionaire trying to buy his girlfriend a place in fashion. Billions can't stop you from being the butt of a joke. Sanchez Bezos may drink from a mug that says "Woke Up Sexy as Hell Again," but her Met Gala moment proves that cool is still one thing that can't be bought.
