Maryann Kohberger, the mother of convicted murderer Bryan Kohberger, vehemently defended her son's innocence shortly after his arrest in December 2022, according to newly released details from a partial interview transcript. In a voluntary discussion with investigators, she insisted authorities had made a 'really, really bad mistake' and described her son as an 'angel,' saying, 'My son would not do this. I will stake my life on that.'
Interview Details Revealed in New Book
The interview is featured in Christopher Whitcomb's new book 'Broken Plea.' It took place while a state police SWAT team executed a search warrant at the Kohberger family home. Maryann Kohberger denied that her son had anger issues or a confrontational nature, offering insights into his personal life: he was not dating, had few friends, had overcome a past heroin addiction, and was academically organized but personally messy.
Investigation and Guilty Plea
Despite investigators informing her of significant probable cause evidence, Maryann Kohberger described the situation as a 'nightmare.' Bryan Kohberger later pleaded guilty in July 2025 to avoid the death penalty and is now serving four consecutive life sentences without parole for the murders of four University of Idaho students.
