Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp may face an expensive bill if he keeps a promise he made relating to the charges against Manchester City. News broke on Friday that City had been found guilty of 114 of the 115 charges made by the Premier League relating to alleged financial breaches.
City's expected appeal
City have, and still do, maintain their innocence and are expected to launch an appeal to a guilty verdict. If found guilty after appeal, a range of punishments for City are rumoured to include points deductions, as well as past titles being stripped and potential expulsion from the Premier League.
Klopp often went head-to-head with City for the Premier League title during his time as Liverpool manager, finishing second in the 2018/19 and 2021/22 seasons, amassing more than 90 points in each of them.
Klopp's Mallorca promise
The former Liverpool boss left his role at Anfield in the summer of 2024, and it was a few months later that he was asked about the possible ramifications if City are found guilty of the charges against them. Speaking in January 2025, when he served as Red Bull's global head of football, Klopp promised to buy beer and hold a 'parade' in Mallorca if Liverpool are retrospectively awarded past titles.
Klopp said at the time: "Did you say few months or three? Ah okay. We're getting closer. Should? I don't say anything. Would? We had this discussion when we left, if it would happen I told all the people who want it, just book the flight and I buy the beer. Whatever we have to celebrate, good weather, we would have our own parade in my garden. God what a headline. We will see. I didn't follow it all. I'm surprised you're telling me it's two months away. Let's see."
Current role and upcoming fixture
Klopp recently left his role with Red Bull and took his first managerial job since leaving Liverpool in the summer, where he became the head coach of the Germany national team. Liverpool are scheduled to face City in the Premier League in their first match after the international break on October 11.
