Jordyn Wieber Resigns, Husband Takes Over as Arkansas Coach

Olympic gold medalist Jordyn Wieber is resigning as head coach of the University of Arkansas women's gymnastics team, a position she has held since 2020. In a school press release, Wieber stated she is 'stepping away from athletics to focus on my family and other passions.' The press release announced that Arkansas assistant coach and fellow Olympian Chris Brooks will replace her, but notably omitted that the two are married.

Online Reactions to the Announcement

The news sparked widespread commentary on social media, given Wieber's stated intention to focus on family while her husband assumes her role. One user on X remarked, 'Focus on family, but her husband is taking her role?' accompanied by an inverted smiling emoji. Another commented, 'This is awkward. [She's] stepping away to focus on family, but her husband is taking over full responsibility of the team.' A critic claimed the situation 'doesn't make sense' before speculating that Wieber 'just wanted to stop working.'

Wieber's Explanation

During a press conference in Fayetteville, Wieber elaborated on her decision, which came after Arkansas's national semifinal loss earlier this month. 'It wasn't an easy decision; I didn't take it lightly, obviously,' she said, standing alongside Brooks. 'I really wanted to get through the season and give the team my all... so it was really after the national championship that I kinda began really thinking long and hard about the future and what that looks like for our future and the program.' She emphasized her desire to ensure a smooth transition for the athletes, adding, 'I just feel so confident they're in the best possible hands with these coaches.' Wieber later joked that she can now 'yell at judges when they don't give a score that's fair.'

Supportive Voices

Despite the criticism, Wieber received numerous supportive comments. One fan wrote, 'She's happy and he's happy, we should all be so lucky. Let her go raise her kid.' Another supporter stated, 'She did an excellent job. Motherhood is more important. Good for her.' The couple began dating in 2016, married in 2021, and welcomed a daughter in June 2023.

Wieber's Legacy and Recent Ventures

Wieber, the 2011 world all-around champion and a key member of Team USA's 'Fierce Five' that won gold at the 2012 London Olympics, has also ventured into reality television. Last year, she appeared on Fox's 'Special Forces: World's Toughest Test' but voluntarily withdrew in the third episode, citing an intense fear of water triggered by a challenge. Her resignation may have already impacted the program, as top gymnast Joscelyn Roberson, who has competed for Team USA, entered the transfer portal earlier this week and appears likely to leave Fayetteville.
