Jon Rahm leaves LIV Golf after three seasons, £386m deal

Jon Rahm has decided to leave LIV Golf after three seasons, his lawyer confirmed on Wednesday, with the circuit currently undergoing bankruptcy proceedings in the US. The 31-year-old Spaniard, who signed a record £386m ($500m) contract in December 2023, will not participate in the restructured LIV 2.0.

Contract and Departure Details

Rahm's attorney, John Beck, said via ESPN: "Mr Rahm has independently reviewed the proposed terms of LIV 2.0 and has determined that those terms are unacceptable to him, and he will not be participating going forward in LIV 2.0." The Athletic reported that Rahm and LIV are working towards a separation agreement, with a deal expected by October 15.

Rahm is reportedly owed up to $150m (£113m) for the remainder of his contract. LIV Golf entered bankruptcy proceedings after Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund withdrew support at the end of the season, having invested $5bn (£3.7bn) over four years.

PGA Tour Return Issues

A return to the PGA Tour is not straightforward. Rahm previously declined the tour's Returning Member Program, offered to him, Cameron Smith, Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka—only Koepka accepted. PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp said last month there are no plans to bring back the program.

As a result, Rahm would face a mandatory one-year suspension before being eligible to return, meaning he could not play on the circuit until late August next year. He has, however, taken steps towards a traditional tour return: in May, he ended his dispute with the DP World Tour, paying around £2.21m in fines and securing conditional releases for 2026, making him eligible for the Ryder Cup.

Season and Future

Rahm enjoyed a successful 2026 LIV season, winning the individual championship for the third consecutive year, with wins in Hong Kong in March and LIV Mexico City in April. His Legion XIII team also secured the 2026 Team Championship.

He withdrew from this week's Spanish Open on Tuesday to be with his wife ahead of the birth of their fourth child. He is expected to return on November 5 at the Abu Dhabi Championship on the DP World Tour, needing two more appearances to fulfil his five-tournament commitment for 2026.
