The NSW Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) has heard that former premier Charles Perrottet plotted the downfall of fellow Liberal minister David Elliott, leading to his removal from cabinet.
Allegations of a plot
Evidence presented to the commission detailed a campaign by Perrottet to undermine Elliott, who was then the minister for roads and transport. The plot allegedly involved orchestrating media stories and internal party manoeuvres to force Elliott out of his position.
ICAC is investigating whether the actions breached ministerial standards and constituted corrupt conduct. The commission heard that Perrottet worked with staff and other party figures to diminish Elliott's standing within the government.
Elliott's removal
Elliott was eventually sacked from cabinet in a reshuffle that followed the alleged plot. He has denied any wrongdoing and has not been accused of corruption.
The hearings continue, with further evidence expected to be presented in the coming days. The commission will determine whether any charges or findings of corruption are warranted.
