Haaland interview blocked over Man City financial charges questions
Haaland interview blocked over City charges questions

Nordic broadcaster Viaplay was not permitted to ask Erling Haaland about Manchester City being found guilty of breaking Premier League financial rules. City have appealed an independent commission's ruling that they were guilty of 114 charges made against them by the division.

Interview restrictions revealed

With the end of the international break, Haaland appeared in a rare interview with Premier League rights holder Viaplay on Thursday. The forward was scheduled to preview the clash between Manchester City and Liverpool.

With a ferocious clash set to take place, intensified by the judgement on City's rule-breaking, Viaplay had planned to focus some questioning on the verdict that was made against the club. The opportunity was not forthcoming, however.

Norwegian outlet VG reports that they were told by Viaplay sports director Kristian Oma that the broadcaster informed Manchester City and Premier League studios of this desire before being told it would not be permitted. Oma explained that City, nor any other Premier League club had allowed questions on the verdict ahead of this weekend.

Haaland urges unity

In a separate interview, Haaland called on the team and its supporters to stick together. He said: "I think they [the City fans travelling to Anfield] are gonna have a good time.

"We have to stick together, we have to stay with each other, and we have to stay positive.

"No matter what happens in life, we always have to have a smile. We have to stay positive, look ahead and try to win football games and try to enjoy the situation and win the game.

"We have to stick together, and we have to spread the love to each other. So yeah, stick together, enjoy the ride and smile."

Maresca faces questions

City boss Enzo Maresca was faced with more extensive questioning during his press conference on Friday morning. The Italian was probed about his stance on the charges as he repeatedly asserted that he trusts the club and that they would their appeal.

"I understand the reason why most of you are here," he said. "The only thing I can say is there is a process ongoing and in this moment I completely trust the club.

"I trust the club because I trust the people. It's the reason I joined the club. There is not another club in the world I would like to be at. I am happy and proud to be here."
