Pep Guardiola has confirmed his departure from Manchester City after Sunday's match against Aston Villa, ending a decade-long tenure that yielded 20 trophies and transformed the club's identity. In a reflective press conference, Guardiola drew parallels with his greatest rival Jurgen Klopp, citing a loss of energy as a key reason for leaving.
A Decade of Dominance
Guardiola, who arrived in 2016, leaves City as a club legend. A stand at the Etihad Stadium will bear his name, and a statue has been commissioned in his honor. His 94-year-old father will attend the final match, alongside goalkeeper Ederson, whose saves secured the 2023 Champions League title. "It has been an experience maybe of my life," Guardiola said. "I want to say proper goodbye to my people on Sunday. I want to hug them, all of them, on the pitch."
Messages from Legends
Guardiola revealed he received messages from Sir Alex Ferguson, Kevin De Bruyne, and Manuel Akanji. He deferred to Ferguson as "the greatest in this country" and lamented that Johan Cruyff could not witness City's success. Reflecting on City's transformation, Guardiola noted, "Sir Alex, we are not the noisy neighbours. We are the neighbours, just the neighbours."
The Klopp Parallel
Like Klopp, who left Liverpool citing exhaustion, Guardiola felt his energy waning. "I feel I would not have the energy that is required [to continue]," he said. "I think the club needs a new manager, new energy. Start to write another chapter." Former assistant Enzo Maresca is the likely successor.
Perfect Timing
Guardiola leaves on a high, having won both domestic cups this season. "It's the perfect moment, the perfect time," he said. "Much better than last season, for example." He admitted telling his players was nerve-wracking: "The speech was a disaster. I was so nervous."
Looking Ahead
Guardiola plans to rest and take a break from management. "Now rest. No plans to train for a while. I have to live my life and see what happens. I need to breathe a little bit and relax." He leaves City in strong health, with a legacy that includes four consecutive Premier League titles. As he recalled Noel Gallagher's words: "Many years ago, we were a team that were not able to win four games in a row. And now we are going [to win] four Premier League in a row."
