GMB: Richard Madeley clashes with Chris Philp over prisons

Good Morning Britain aired a heated clash as Conservative MP Chris Philp joined presenters Richard Madeley and Ranvir Singh to discuss proposals for the controversial early prison release scheme. Launched in October 2023, the scheme was brought in to address capacity pressures on the prison estate but was adjusted under Keir Starmer's 2026 Sentencing Act. This made several changes to how and when prisoners are released to serve the rest of their sentence in the community.

Richard Madeley's Challenge

During the ITV programme, Richard stated: "I would be remiss if I didn't put it to you, that we wouldn't be having this conversation at all, we wouldn't be in this mess if the Conservative government in 14 years hadn't completely dropped the ball and cocked up."

Chris Philp's Response

The Shadow Home Secretary responded: "The last Conservative government opened up 14,000 new prison places ... and the last Conservative government never had to release dangerous criminals." But before the politician could finish, the ITV star interjected: "Are you not going to take any responsibility at all for the situation we're in?"
