Leo continued: "Officials, though, on behalf of Burnham, have said that he’s going to be in ‘listening mode’ as he spends August travelling the country to discuss the pressing cost of living crisis. Having promised on the steps of Downing Street to give the public ‘breathing space’, he’s expected to announce a series of measures intended to help with soaring bills."

The anchor noted that these measures would include VAT cuts on energy bills and a £2 cap on bus fares, already announced in Burnham's first week in office. Burnham will also focus on revitalising high streets and use the summer tour to build a 10-year plan for the country.
However, Leo was critical of the Prime Minister's long-term vision, saying: "We talk about this 10 year plan – it’s very optimistic, isn’t it? Working out plans and strategies for the fact that you may be in office in 10 years’ time. Very hopeful!"

Leo also relayed a statement from a spokesperson for the Prime Minister, who said Burnham would be "getting out of Westminster and meeting people where they are." The spokesperson added: "He thinks Westminster has got used to telling people that everyday hassles – like hidden pricing and consumers being ripped off – must be accepted as part of life. He doesn’t think that’s right. That’s why he’s going to start rolling out a series of pro-consumer cost of living measures to give people some room to breathe."
There was further criticism from opposition figures, as Leo noted: "Opposition figures have hit back this evening, accusing the prime minister of tinkering. Robert Jenrick said the prime minister should scrap green levies and taxes on energy bills, and also pledge to rule out tax rises in October’s Budget."
