James Garner Follows Maguire in Reacting to England World Cup Snub
Garner and Maguire React to England World Cup Omission

England midfielder James Garner has followed Harry Maguire in publicly expressing his disappointment after being omitted from Thomas Tuchel's 26-man World Cup squad. The Everton player, who earned his first two caps in March, reacted on Instagram with the words: "Gutted is an understatement. Good luck to the boys."

Tuchel's Bold Selection Decisions

Thomas Tuchel announced his squad for this summer's tournament on Friday morning, with several high-profile names missing out. Alongside Garner and Maguire, the list of omitted players includes Cole Palmer, Phil Foden, Lewis Hall, Jarrod Bowen, Morgan Gibbs-White, and Trent Alexander-Arnold. Surprisingly, John Stones, Dan Burn, Djed Spence, Jordan Henderson, and Ivan Toney were included.

Maguire, who has 66 caps, had reacted a day earlier after receiving a personal call from Tuchel, stating he was "shocked and gutted" to miss out. Garner's reaction echoed that sentiment, with Everton's social media post supporting him and noting his quality throughout the season.

Painful Conversations

Tuchel explained that he personally contacted every player left out to discuss his decision. "Very difficult decisions, painful conversations," he said. "What we're trying to achieve as a team and we try to nominate a balanced squad. If everyone was selected, we would have to leave some extraordinary talents at home."

The German coach emphasized that the selections were based on squad balance and positional needs, not on any player's lack of ability. "Did they do anything wrong? No. Could they be in camp? Yes, 100 per cent sure. But for some, it is just the amount of players in a certain position."

Garner, 25, had impressed in the March friendlies against Uruguay and Japan but was unable to displace the likes of Henderson, Declan Rice, Elliot Anderson, and Kobbie Mainoo in central midfield. Despite the setback, both he and Maguire have shown support for the team as they prepare for the World Cup.
