But it’s time for change, and for a new chapter.'
Southgate's eight-year tenure included two European Championship finals and a World Cup semi-final, but his next role is uncertain. Among the options is a return to club management, with Newcastle United mentioned as a possible destination. Eddie Howe has been linked with the England job, and a swap could suit both parties. Southgate already has a good relationship with Newcastle's Kieran Trippier, and his experience managing big characters could help the Magpies.
Another possibility is a move into punditry. ITV is reportedly keen to sign Southgate as an analyst, following the success of managers like Ange Postecoglou and Thomas Frank during Euro 2024 coverage. However, it remains to be seen if Southgate wants to step away from management at this stage.
Continuity within the England setup is also an option. Southgate has helped integrate stars from successful age-group teams, and Lee Carsley, the Under-21 manager, has been touted as his successor. A 'move upstairs' to a technical director role could suit everyone.
Crystal Palace, where Southgate began his playing career, is another potential destination. The club has a history of hiring former England managers, and Southgate's fondness for the squad was evident in his decision to start Marc Guehi at centre-back.
