Manchester City fans showed their appreciation for Pep Guardiola in his last game at the Etihad, with many expressing devastation and gratitude for his transformative decade at the club. The atmosphere was emotional as supporters paid their respects to the man who led them to unprecedented success.
A Glorious Epoch
Sophie Hope, a lifelong City fan, said: "I'm utterly devastated and have already shed tears." She added: "To say City is part of my DNA is not overstating it. Pep has brought such a huge level of enjoyment, excitement, joy and pride to our club." Hope has been attending matches for 36 years and noted that Guardiola's departure marks the first time her late father will not have known the next manager.
Guardiola created a magical era for City, taking fans on triumphant tours to Real Madrid and other historic European venues. The crowning moment was Istanbul, where City won their first Champions League trophy. Andy Hooper reflected: "Pep took us into a footballing galaxy that only a handful of teams in world football will ever experience. He will be for ever our boss."
Emotional Farewell
The match against Aston Villa saw a record Etihad attendance of 60,332, with fans displaying T-shirts spelling out "Gracies Pep" in Catalan. A mural of Guardiola now adorns a house opposite the ground, and a statue is planned. Guardiola himself was moved to tears, particularly when embracing departing legend Bernardo Silva and John Stones, both of whom received standing ovations and guards of honour.
Guardiola said: "In the next years, if you see me in the States or Europe or somewhere and you are a Man City fan, come and hug me. I will need it." Fans responded with chants of "We've got Guardiola" and bounced beach balls in the stands, initiating his new life with a touch of humour.
As the Blue Moon reaches its highest under Guardiola, fans know it will never shine as bright, but they remain grateful for the journey from the lows of League One to the pinnacle of European football.
