Former Nationals candidate Benjamin Thomas Simpkins has been charged in connection with the alleged fatal hit-and-run of a high school teacher in Western Australia.
Simpkins appeared before the Perth Magistrates Court for the first time on Wednesday, following the death of Katanning Senior High School teacher Luke Russell earlier this month.
The 49-year-old teacher's body was discovered by a member of the public on Marri Drive in Katanning, approximately 277 kilometres south-east of Perth, at 5:35 am on May 13.
Police have charged Simpkins with offences related to the incident, which is believed to have occurred in the early hours of that morning. The court proceedings are ongoing, and further details are expected to emerge as the case develops.
The tragedy has sent shockwaves through the local community, with colleagues and students mourning the loss of a dedicated educator. Luke Russell was a well-respected teacher at Katanning Senior High School, and his sudden death has left many in grief.
More information is anticipated as the investigation continues and the legal process unfolds.
