Emmerdale aired a mystery involving Joe Tate and a brown briefcase on Monday, with it soon revealed it contained a lot of cash. But who was the woman he gave it to?
Joe Tate took a secret revenge against an Emmerdale character on Monday, leading to their exit from the show. But he wasn't working alone, and the mystery surrounding a briefcase soon exposed a sinister plot.
Joe's Secret Revenge Against Vinny Dingle
Throughout the episode, we saw Joe carrying around and looking into a brown case. We didn't know what was in there, and he refused to tell anyone. It was only at the end of the episode that we finally saw what was in the case, and why it was so significant.
Joe was paying someone to help him, and it led to a horror twist for Vinny Dingle. Vinny appeared in court, after being charged over the deaths of Jimmy King and Dawn Taylor recently.
The Briefcase's Contents Revealed
Vinny caused Jimmy to crash, after Vinny was distracted while driving his own vehicle due to being on the phone to Gabby Thomas. As Vinny awaited his fate in court, his exit was sealed. The judge told him she was "making an example of him" due to the loss of life he caused when he drove while distracted.
Vinny and his loved ones were mortified when the judge read out the sentencing, and stated he would be in prison for 10 years. His loved ones, and even Jimmy's widow Nicola King, called the sentence length "harsh". But it all soon came out that it was intentional in that this was Joe's secret revenge.
The Paid-Off Judge
That mystery briefcase? It was filled with cash. We saw it finally be opened at the end of the episode on Monday, and who was it opened by? The judge in Vinny's court appearance.
So Joe had paid the judge off, with a lot of cash, in order for her to inflict a strict sentence on Vinny. Joe, the partner of Dawn who died in the crash, got his revenge, and no one even knows about it.
Tampering with the legal system and covering his tracks, Joe got Vinny to pay for his crimes without anyone knowing. The only one who does know this is the woman he paid off, the judge.
The person telling Vinny he would spend the next 10 years behind bars for his crime knew full well she was "making an example out of him" simply because she'd been bribed. But will this somehow be exposed, and if yes, will Joe and the judge face trouble?
Emmerdale airs weeknights at 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
