A woman has shared the story of a disastrous date in Sydney on December 30, 2002, which ended with her date telling her there was "no wow factor" and her vomiting in her car on the drive home.
The woman, identified only as Georgia, met a man named John* on an Australian dating site. He was in his 30s, English, and worked in luxury goods, describing himself as an "understated person" in his profile. After several lovely dinners together, John invited her to his flat on the night before New Year's Eve, telling her she could park in his visitor space.
The Date Takes a Turn
Upon arriving at his upmarket apartment with water views, John suggested they go out for a drink at a scruffy bar nearby. After deep-fried camembert and white wine, they returned to his flat. As they sat on his sofa, John told Georgia she was very sexy, but then suddenly changed his tone.
"Oh God, I'm really sorry, I just can't," he stammered. When she asked what he couldn't do, he replied, "I can't… With you. There's no wow factor." He explained he couldn't continue seeing her because he "really need[s] the wow factor." Georgia, stunned, yelled, "The mother of your children?! Well, at least I didn't pop out babies before you had this revelation!"
An Awkward Night and Morning
Unable to drive home, Georgia stayed the night, sleeping on the edge of John's huge bed, only removing her shoes and earrings. She slept poorly and woke up feeling sick, but couldn't vomit in his presence. She couldn't sneak out because John had to open the garage door for her.
He made her a cup of tea, and they exchanged no words. After an awkward lift ride down, she drove off, but soon felt sick again. With green lights as far as she could see, she vomited, covering herself and her car's sheepskin seat cover.
Reflecting on the Experience
Georgia cleaned herself up before her parents returned. She told her mother, "Just because I didn't come home last night, it doesn't mean the date went well." Her mother said it was probably for the best, as she didn't want a boyfriend with kids. Georgia spent New Year's Eve with her parents at a local Thai restaurant.
She started 2003 feeling incredibly single but didn't cancel her online dating membership until later that year, after a disastrous lunch where she was asked to guess the cost of her date's shirt. *Name has been changed.
