Dad demands stepkids change dog's name over son's upset

A dad has sparked a family feud after demanding his stepchildren change their dog's name because it is the same as his son's. The man married his now-wife two months ago after three years of long-distance dating, ensuring their children met and even attending family counselling before making things official.

Taking to Reddit, he said: "We also did family counselling with everyone to make sure marriage was the right option for the kids. We only proceeded after making sure everyone was ok with it." However, his wife's dog's name was never brought up during this process, even though it later became a "huge" issue for him and his son.

Discovery of the shared name

Whenever he was around the dog, it was always referred to as "Mick", but he didn't realise this was its full name until it was too late. It was only after the couple got married and bought a house together that he discovered the dog had the same name as his son.

He said: "My son and I found out about the name together. In that moment, I found it as a funny coincidence and my wife just didn't think it was important. I can understand why she felt that way because I feel the same." However, he claimed his son was deeply offended and demanded that the dog's name be officially changed, creating tension between the children in the household.

Sentimental value and compromise

The dad said the name has sentimental value for his stepchildren because their late grandfather was the one who gave them the dog. He explained: "This created a conflict with my stepkids because the name has sentimental meaning to them, and they feel it's not fair to the dog. I felt really stuck because I didn't want to jeopardise my relationship with my stepkids in this critical stage. So I tried to get them to come up with a solution together."

The children eventually compromised, agreeing they would only call the dog "Mick" when the man's son wasn't around. But the dad said his son still felt this wasn't enough and wanted the dog's collar tag changed, too. As the dispute continued, he claimed his son began badmouthing his wife and stepchildren to other family members and eventually stopped speaking to him altogether.

Wife's stand and Reddit reaction

His wife eventually took a stand and told her children that the dog's name would be changed. But when the dad told his son, he was reportedly unhappy that the decision had not been made sooner, telling his father it was "too late".

Now, the dad has turned to Reddit to ask whether he was wrong to demand the name change on his son's behalf. However, many users sided with the stepchildren and argued that the boy was overreacting.

One person wrote: "Honestly, I feel like your son is wrong in this situation. I get you're trying to keep the peace, but this is petty, and if your son is causing all sorts of other interfamilial conflict, it sounds like he is just a drama queen. Tell him to get over it."

Another added: "You need to stop letting the child run your house and set the rules. Obviously, you're trying to make it work for everyone, and that's admirable, but your son is being a jerk. Changing the dog's name teaches your son to throw fits and alienate his family when he doesn't get his way."
