BBC Removes Scott Mills Content After Sacking Over Allegations

BBC Purges Scott Mills Content Following Presenter's Dismissal

The BBC has taken significant steps to remove content featuring former Radio 2 presenter Scott Mills from its archives and schedules following his sudden termination last month. This comprehensive erasure includes multiple episodes of the iconic music programme Top of the Pops that Mills hosted during his tenure with the broadcasting corporation.

Schedule Changes and Content Removal

Viewers have noticed that three specific episodes of Top of the Pops originally broadcast on 6th, 13th, and 20th August 1999 have been omitted from BBC Four's regular repeat schedule. These episodes, all presented by Mills, have been conspicuously skipped in the programming lineup. The next scheduled broadcast will feature the 26th August 1999 episode hosted by Gail Porter instead.

While episodes from May, June, and July 1999 remain available for streaming on BBC iPlayer, the August episodes presented by Mills have been completely removed from the platform. This selective editing of the archive represents a deliberate effort by the BBC to distance itself from the disgraced presenter.

Background to the Dismissal

The BBC announced Mills' contract termination on 30th March following what they described as "new information" received in the weeks preceding his dismissal. The corporation cited "allegations about his personal conduct" as the primary reason for their decision to sever ties with the 53-year-old presenter.

Subsequently, the Metropolitan Police revealed they had investigated Mills regarding allegations of serious sexual offences involving a teenage boy under 16 years old in 2016. Although the Crown Prosecution Service determined that "the evidential threshold had not been met" to bring charges, the BBC proceeded with termination based on their own internal processes and the new information they had obtained.

Widespread Removal of Mills-Related Content

The erasure extends far beyond Top of the Pops episodes. The BBC has systematically removed Mills' presence from multiple platforms and projects:

  • Mills' "Top Picks" page has been deleted from BBC iPlayer
  • His short-form podcast series Under the Bonnet: On the Road, produced in collaboration with Mercedes-Benz, has been removed from Spotify
  • Tyler West has replaced Mills on the Race Across the World companion podcast
  • The BBC has confirmed Mills will not host this year's Eurovision Song Contest coverage

Physical Memorials and Academic Recognition Affected

The removal campaign has extended to physical memorials honouring Mills. On 3rd April, a plaque commemorating the presenter at Fleet Services on the M3 motorway was taken down. This plaque had been installed in March 2016 following a campaign by Mills' former co-host Chris Stark and marked what was informally known as "Scott Mills Bridge."

Additionally, Southampton Solent University is reportedly considering rescinding the honorary doctorate of arts awarded to Mills in 2009. According to reports, the university's doctorate scrutiny panel will recommend withdrawal of the award when they convene later this month.

Mills' Response to the Allegations

Following his dismissal, Mills released a statement acknowledging the police investigation while maintaining his position regarding the allegations. "An allegation was made against me in 2016 of a historic sexual offence, which was the subject of a police investigation in which I fully cooperated and responded to in 2018," he stated.

Mills emphasized that the Crown Prosecution Service had determined insufficient evidence existed to bring charges and noted that the investigation related to an allegation dating back nearly three decades. He expressed hope that "the public and the media will understand and respect my wish not to make any further public comment on this matter" and thanked former colleagues and listeners who had reached out to him.

The BBC has declined to provide additional commentary on the specific decisions regarding content removal when contacted for clarification about their archival policies following presenter dismissals.
