Hundreds of people were arrested across France on Saturday night after celebrations for Paris Saint-Germain's second Champions League title descended into violence. Police detained a total of 416 individuals nationwide, with 283 arrests made in the Paris area alone, following the club's penalty shootout victory over Arsenal.
Disturbances in the Capital
In the upscale 8th Arrondissement of Paris, fans attempted to storm a police station, resulting in one officer being injured. Vandalism was widespread, with six vehicles and two shop fronts damaged. Barricades made from bicycles were cleared near the PSG stadium in the 16th Arrondissement. Fans also set off flares and started fires in the streets, prompting a heavy police response.
Echoes of Previous Violence
The unrest mirrors similar scenes from May last year, when over 500 arrests were made across France after PSG secured their first Champions League title. Authorities had prepared for potential disorder but were still overwhelmed by the scale of the disturbances. Officials condemned the violence, stating that such behaviour tarnishes the club's achievement.
PSG's victory over Arsenal on penalties marked a historic moment for the club, but the ensuing chaos has cast a shadow over the celebrations. Police continue to investigate the incidents, and further arrests are expected.
