A vintage photograph taken on a British beach in the 1940s has sparked claims of time travel after a man appears to be holding a modern mobile phone. The image, captured during the Second World War, shows crowds enjoying a seaside day out, but one man in a brown suit has caught the attention of conspiracy theorists.
The man can be seen looking down at a small object that resembles a smartphone, despite such technology not existing for decades. Social media users have nicknamed him the "texting time traveller", with some convinced the photograph is evidence that time travel is possible.
Sceptics Offer Simpler Explanation
Others, however, believe there is a more straightforward explanation for what the man is holding. One person dismissed the claims, commenting: "I think that chap is rolling a cigarette!"
This is not the only vintage footage to fuel speculation about time travellers. A clip filmed in 1938 shows a young woman walking through a crowd while holding a mysterious object to her ear, appearing to talk into it before lowering it as the footage ends.

Some conspiracy theorists say the object in the 1938 clip looks remarkably similar to a modern mobile phone. The mystery deepened when a YouTube user claimed the woman was their great-grandmother and insisted she was genuinely using a mobile phone. According to the user, Planetcheck, the device was an experimental wireless phone developed by DuPont at its facility in Leominster, Massachusetts.
While the claims have never been proven, the footage continues to fuel debate among those who believe some people may have communicated across time before the technology officially existed.
