The Norwegian Nobel Committee has confirmed that 287 candidates are under consideration for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, with former U.S. President Donald Trump likely among them. Committee Secretary Kristian Berg Harpviken announced on Thursday that the list includes 208 individuals and 79 organisations, noting a significant turnover from previous years.
Renewal and Relevance
Harpviken, who took office in January 2025, expressed surprise at the annual renewal of candidates. Despite global conflicts and strained international cooperation, he emphasised the prize's enduring importance. "The Peace Prize is even more important in a period like the one we're living in," he said, adding that there is as much commendable work as ever.
Trump's Nomination
Leaders from Cambodia, Israel, and Pakistan have indicated they nominated Trump for the prize, with submissions reportedly made in spring and summer 2025. However, nominations remain confidential for 50 years, and Harpviken declined to confirm Trump's inclusion. A nomination does not imply endorsement by the committee.
Thousands of individuals worldwide can propose names, including government and parliament members, heads of state, university professors, and former laureates.
Other Potential Nominees
Betting sites list various potential laureates, including Yulia Navalnaya, Pope Leo, and Sudan's Emergency Response Rooms. Among possible nominees are U.S. Senator Lisa Murkowski and Danish MP Aaja Chemnitz, nominated by Norwegian lawmaker Lars Haltbrekken for their work on Arctic peace. "Together they have worked relentlessly to build trust and secure peaceful development in the Arctic," Haltbrekken said, noting Greenland's heightened focus due to Trump's acquisition efforts.
Concern for Narges Mohammadi
Harpviken expressed deep concern for 2023 laureate Narges Mohammadi, whose health has deteriorated after a heart attack in Iranian prison. Her supporters report her life is in imminent danger. "Her sister visited her yesterday, and the reports are alarming," Harpviken said, urging Iranian authorities to release her for medical treatment.
Prize Announcement
The 2026 Nobel Peace Prize will be announced on October 9, with the ceremony on December 10. Last year's laureate was Venezuela's Maria Corina Machado.
