Sky News interrupted its regular programming for a breaking news alert on Tuesday, June 30, as Prime Minister Keir Starmer addressed the nation live from Berkshire to unveil the government's long-delayed defence investment plan. The announcement came after John Healey resigned as defence secretary earlier this month, claiming he had only been offered £13.5 billion for the Defence Investment Plan. The new settlement includes an extra £15 billion over four years, partly funded by cuts to capital budgets from other departments. Starmer vowed this would ensure the UK is ready to fight Russia if Vladimir Putin launches an attack in 2030.
Live Gaffe Sparks Laughter
The press conference took an unexpected turn when Starmer, responding to a question from Sky News political editor Beth Rigby, introduced her as 'Beth from Sky Sports, Beth Rigby.' The blunder was met with laughter from the room, as Rigby jokingly replied, 'Sky Sports? I wish I was.' Realising his mistake, Starmer quickly shook his head and joined the laughter before correcting himself: 'Sky News, Beth. Not Sky Sports, but I'm sure you can do that as well.' Rigby responded, 'Maybe one day,' before proceeding with her question about Britain's standing on the world stage.
Viewer Reactions Divided
The moment sparked mixed reactions among viewers. One remarked, 'You've got to hand it to the Labour leaders… Corbyn, Starmer, Burnham, they all have an incredible sense of humour.' Another joked, 'Beth from Sky Sports... it's Keir from the Comedy Channel.' A third noted, 'Starmer looks like he’s had the weight of the world lifted from him now he knows he’s going. I’ve never seen him this “natural” before. Makes you wonder what the job brings with it.' However, not all were amused; a fourth fumed, 'It’s not light-hearted, this is the PM of the country. He is so off the ball, he can’t remember which news networks these journalists are from. It’s the same people there every time.' Sky News itself tweeted the clip, captioning it: 'Beth from Sky Sports.' - Sir Keir Starmer 'Sky Sports... I wish it was.' - @BethRigby.
Defence Spending Details
Beyond the gaffe, Starmer outlined the defence investment plan, acknowledging that other areas of government spending would be slashed to fund the military. This includes cuts to road and energy projects to pay for defence. The plan allocates billions for the next generation of stealth jets, represents the largest ever investment in drone warfare, and confirms the UK will purchase F-35A planes capable of carrying nuclear bombs. As a result, older equipment such as two Type 23 frigates and older Chinook and Wildcat helicopters will be retired.
