Sir Keir Starmer is fighting to remain in his job today as he faces mounting pressure from the backbenches to resign after Labour were hammered in the local elections. At least 20 Labour MPs have so far called on him to either stand down or set a timetable for his departure.
Overnight, Reform UK gained a seventh council from Labour, winning 31 seats in Calderdale, West Yorkshire, to add to the three councillors it already had. Labour, which previously had 26 seats on the council, lost 18, while the Conservatives were down 10 and the Liberal Democrats four.
