Rochdale and York City will contest the most dramatic final day in National League history on Saturday, with both sides exceeding 100 points but only one guaranteed automatic promotion to the Football League. York sit top on 107 points, two ahead of second-placed Rochdale on 105, meaning a win for the Minstermen at Spotland would secure the title, while a victory for Dale would see them leapfrog their rivals.
The unprecedented points tally highlights the gulf between the top two and the rest of the division. Barnet won the league last season with 102 points, and Chesterfield the year before with 98. Yet under the current structure, only one automatic promotion spot exists, forcing the runner-up into the play-offs – a lottery that only six second-placed teams have won since 2002-03.
Both clubs have relied on late heroics to keep the race alive. Rochdale have scored stoppage-time winners in three of their past four games, including a 99th-minute strike from top scorer Emmanuel Dieseruvwe against Braintree Town. York thought they had won the title after beating Yeovil Town, only to learn of Dale's last-gasp victory, which set up the final-day showdown.
Rochdale’s season has been disrupted by pitch problems, forcing four home postponements and one abandonment. They relocated two fixtures to Accrington Stanley’s Wham Stadium in December and January. Despite holding games in hand mid-season, they failed to capitalise, while York dropped just seven points from 63 since New Year, powered by 34-goal Ollie Pearce and support from Josh Stones and Alex Newby.
The National League has launched its 3UP campaign, backed by all 72 clubs and the Football Supporters’ Association, to secure a third promotion place and prevent such a scenario. But for now, one of these two outstanding sides must face the play-off lottery, adding extra tension to what promises to be a thrilling finale at Spotland.
