Handy Men Are Britain's Biggest Sex Gods, Study Finds

Men who are skilled at DIY are considered Britain's biggest sex gods, according to research. Nearly half of those polled said being handy around the house makes someone more attractive, while 48% believe DIY skills are a sign of intelligence.

Almost seven in 10 reckon practical know-how is just as important as being good at maths. This means a man who can paint a wall without splattering, build flat-pack furniture without frustration, or fix a dripping tap could have a better chance of finding a lover.

DIY Capital and Regional Skills

Birmingham was crowned England's DIY capital, with 69% of residents saying they are confident tackling jobs around the home. Other handy cities include Southampton, Manchester, Leeds, and London.

However, not everyone is as skilled as they claim. One in four admitted pretending to know what they were doing with DIY to impress friends or family. Millennials were the biggest bluffers, with more than a third exaggerating their practical talents, the Johnstone’s Paint survey found.

Expert Opinion and School Lessons

Donna Taylor of Johnstone’s Paint said: "It seems knowing how to handle a paintbrush or work a drill can make you quite a catch." She added: "Being able to paint a wall neatly or build a sturdy chest of drawers are key qualities in a romantic match."

The survey also found that two-thirds of Brits think basic DIY should be taught in schools. Taylor noted: "DIY skills can show independence, creativity and problem-solving ability."
