Americans Exposed to Hantavirus Enjoy Nebraska Hospitality

The 18 American passengers who were exposed to hantavirus on the MV Hondius cruise ship are experiencing Nebraska hospitality as they await further instructions on their quarantine duration at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha. Meanwhile, a 12th illness linked to the ship was confirmed in the Netherlands on Friday, as health officials continue monitoring hundreds of potentially exposed individuals.

No Symptoms Yet, But Quarantine Continues

Dr. Michael Wadman, who oversees the National Quarantine Unit, stated during a Friday news conference that none of the American passengers have shown symptoms. However, he deferred to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) regarding whether the full 42-day quarantine period is necessary. The CDC did not respond to inquiries about the passengers' accommodations, which include hotel-like rooms with negative-pressure ventilation and waste sterilization systems to prevent germ escape.

Understanding Hantavirus

Hantavirus typically spreads through rodent droppings and is not easily transmitted between people. However, the Andes virus strain detected in this outbreak may rarely spread person-to-person. Symptoms usually appear one to eight weeks after exposure, prompting the lengthy quarantine recommendation.

Passengers Adapt to Quarantine Life

Upon realizing the extended stay, passengers began ordering necessities, as they were only allowed a small plastic sack of belongings from the ship. A steady stream of packages has arrived since May 11, when passengers first reached Omaha. Staff at the nation's only dedicated quarantine unit are helping pass the time with twice-daily symptom checks, special meals featuring local food trucks, Nebraska delicacies like Runzas, and educational sessions on topics such as sandhill crane migration. High-speed internet connections enable virtual contact with loved ones.

Jake Rosmarin, a passenger from Boston, acknowledged occasional loneliness but focuses on staying positive. He appreciates the volunteer nurses and doctors from Nebraska Medicine, who delivered his favorite Starbucks drink and helped make his room homier with a new mattress pad, pillows, and photos. During a tornado warning on Sunday evening, passengers briefly left their rooms while wearing masks and maintaining distance.

Upcoming Meals and Activities

The hospital plans to serve Runza on Tuesday and Omaha Steaks on Thursday. Rosmarin ordered a barbecue bacon Runza, a local specialty similar to a bierock. Governor Jim Pillen, a hog farmer, hopes to arrange a pork tenderloin dinner if prepared correctly.

Quarantine Duration Uncertain

Wadman noted that passengers have been cooperative, despite the CDC issuing a formal order to prevent two from leaving earlier this week. Each case will be evaluated individually, and it remains unclear if the CDC will allow early release before the 42 days end. Twelve people worldwide from the MV Hondius have fallen ill, including a crew member in the Netherlands. Three deaths have occurred, including a Dutch couple believed to be the first exposed in South America. No deaths have been reported since May 2, according to WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

University of Nebraska President Jeffrey Gold stated that new cases will inform decisions on quarantine duration, with the CDC making the final call. Any symptoms or positive tests provide valuable biological insights influencing ongoing assessments.
