Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have been criticised after Wrexham's new training base was built without planning permission. The club issued an apology after its new Colliers Park HQ in Gresford was unveiled before it had been assessed by a planning committee.
Retrospective application criticised
The application to build a new pavilion was only launched in August, when most of it had already been completed. Gresford community council planning committee chair Councillor Mike Morris criticised the Hollywood duo and those involved with the construction.
Cllr Morris said: "I do wish that people would get their act in order and not put in retrospective applications just because it suits you - which, at the end of the day, [is] what it came down to."
Club apologises
Aidan Miller, the club's chief strategy officer, said the club had issued a "sincere apology". He said the club sought to undertake the works during the summer off-season period, when activity at the site is significantly reduced.
Miller added: "The club recognises that planning permission would ordinarily be secured before development commences, and we sincerely apologise to the committee and local residents."
Investment and on-pitch struggles
The investment was completed with the help of Wrexham University and the Welsh Football Association. The new training ground brings all of the club's needs under one roof, described as a "significant step forward" by chief executive Michael Williamson.
The council will vote on the plans at a later date once all reports have been finished. On the pitch, Wrexham suffered a heavy 6-0 defeat to West Ham United, with their only victory this season a 3-0 away win over Millwall.
