The women's half-pipe final at the Milano-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics has been officially postponed to Sunday after a severe snowstorm struck the venue in Livigno, creating unsafe conditions for competition. Heavy snowfall blanketed the half-pipe course, leading organisers to first delay the event by ninety minutes before ultimately pushing it back by a full day.
Weather Conditions Force Event Rescheduling
Poor visibility and accumulating snow made it impossible for the final to proceed as planned on Saturday. The decision to reschedule came after officials determined that conditions posed significant safety risks to athletes attempting to compete in the half-pipe discipline. The rescheduled final is now expected to take place on Sunday morning, which marks the final day of the Winter Games programme.
British Medal Hope Zoe Atkin Among Favourites
Team GB's Zoe Atkin enters the postponed final as one of the leading contenders for gold, aiming to improve upon her ninth-place finish from the Beijing 2022 Games. The 23-year-old freestyle skier delivered an outstanding performance during Thursday's qualifying round, posting a score of 91.50 that remained unbeaten throughout the qualification process.
Atkin's qualifying run established her as a serious threat to defending champion Eileen Gu of China, who qualified in fifth position after encountering difficulties during her initial attempt. Gu recovered with a competitive second run, demonstrating the resilience that has seen her claim five Olympic medals throughout her career.
Atkin's Impressive Competitive Record
The British athlete arrives at these Games as both the reigning X Games champion and current world champion in her discipline. Atkin secured her second X Games title just weeks before the Winter Olympics commenced, adding to her credentials as she prepares for the rescheduled final. She previously shared the overall World Cup crystal globe with China's Li Fanghui during the last competitive season.
Li Fanghui qualified in second position with a score of 90.00 on her second run, setting up what promises to be a compelling contest when conditions permit the final to proceed.
Britain's Snowsport Performance at Milano-Cortina
Zoe Atkin represents Britain's final opportunity for snowsport medal success following a series of near-misses throughout the Games. Freeskier Kirsty Muir finished fourth in both the Big Air and slopestyle events, coming agonisingly close to podium positions on two occasions.
Snowboarder Mia Brookes also secured a fourth-place finish in the snowboard Big Air competition but surprisingly failed to qualify for the slopestyle final. The British team did celebrate one glorious success when Charlotte Bankes and Huw Nightingale claimed Britain's first-ever snowsport gold medal with victory in the mixed snowboard cross event last week.
Despite this historic achievement, the overall performance for GB Snowsport has been mixed throughout the Milano-Cortina Games, with Atkin now carrying the nation's hopes into the postponed half-pipe final on Sunday.
