American skiing legend Lindsey Vonn has opened up about experiencing some of the most difficult days of her life after a tragic double blow. The 41-year-old athlete revealed in a poignant social media post that her beloved dog, Leo, passed away just one day after she suffered a complex leg fracture in a crash at the Winter Olympics in Cortina d'Ampezzo.
Olympic Dreams Dashed by Severe Crash
Vonn, who was a major contender in the women's downhill event, saw her Olympic hopes vanish in seconds when she clipped a gate and fell heavily early in her run. The crash was so severe that she required immediate airlifting to a hospital, where she has since undergone multiple surgeries to address the serious leg injury. This incident occurred merely nine days after another significant crash in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, during her final World Cup race before the Olympics, where she tore her anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). Despite that earlier setback, Vonn had resolved to compete in Cortina, but this latest injury ultimately ended her chances.
Emotional Tribute to Loyal Companion Leo
In an emotional Instagram post, Vonn paid tribute to her 13-year-old dog, Leo, who had recently been diagnosed with lung cancer. She described the overlapping tragedies as devastating, stating that Leo's heart failed him the same day she crashed. Vonn explained that as she lay in her hospital bed the day after her accident, she had to say goodbye to her faithful companion, who was in pain and whose body could no longer sustain his strong spirit.
Vonn expressed her grief, saying: "This has been an incredibly hard few days. Probably the hardest of my life. I have still not come to terms that he is gone. The day I crashed, so did Leo. He had been recently diagnosed with lung cancer but now his heart was failing him."

Reflecting on their 13-year bond, Vonn shared that Leo had been by her side since her second ACL surgery, providing comfort during her most challenging times. She emphasized that there will never be another Leo, calling him her first love.
