UFC Star's Title Shot in Doubt After 'Stupid Accident' Breaks Nose
Merab Dvalishvili's aspirations for a UFC bantamweight title rematch have been thrown into uncertainty following a 'stupid accident' that resulted in a broken nose. The Georgian fighter, who lost his bantamweight belt to Petr Yan in December, has been vocal about his desire for a trilogy bout with the champion. However, this latest injury setback threatens to derail those plans significantly.
Social Media Revelation of Injury
Dvalishvili took to Instagram on Thursday to share the unfortunate news with his fans. In a video, the 35-year-old displayed his newly-broken nose and a black eye, stating: 'What a good day and what a stupid accident. Again, 12 years after, my nose is f***ed up even worse.' He detailed that the injury was more severe than previous breaks, with bones fractured internally and breathing difficulties on one side.
The fighter, who resides in Las Vegas near UFC headquarters, mentioned he would undergo an X-ray, expressing confidence that the UFC would assist despite having no immediate fight scheduled. In a follow-up video posted simultaneously, Dvalishvili revealed the X-ray results showed his nose was broken in two places.
Medical Advice and Career Implications
Consulting a nose surgeon, Dvalishvili was presented with two stark options. The surgeon explained that to properly straighten his nose, other bones would need to be re-broken, requiring a full year of healing time. Dvalishvili immediately rejected this lengthy recovery period, stating: 'Of course I don't want to do that.'
The alternative was to postpone surgery until after retirement, but Dvalishvili defiantly responded: 'I'm not gonna retire in the next 20 years.' Consequently, he has decided to compete with his nose 'even more crooked than it used to be', accepting the physical alteration as part of his fighting career.
Upcoming Commitments and Title Picture
Despite the injury, Dvalishvili remains committed to his scheduled wrestling match against former UFC opponent Henry Cejudo on 18 April in the Real American Freestyle tournament. This demonstrates his determination to stay active while awaiting news on his next UFC appearance.
The bantamweight division's landscape adds complexity to Dvalishvili's situation. Champion Petr Yan, 33, has also been linked to a rematch with Sean O'Malley, who defeated Yan by split decision in 2022. However, Dvalishvili appears the more likely challenger for Yan's next title defence, given O'Malley is booked to face Aiemann Zahabi on the UFC's White House card on 14 June.
Recent History and Rivalries
The rivalry between Dvalishvili and Yan has been intense and multifaceted. After outpointing Yan previously, Dvalishvili went on to claim the bantamweight title in 2024 by defeating Sean O'Malley, following up with a submission victory over 'Suga' Sean last June. However, he then lost the title back to Yan in December, nearly three years after his initial points win over the now two-time champion.
Yan's championship pedigree is well-established, having first held the bantamweight belt from 2020 to 2021 and the interim title from 2021 until 2022. This history makes the potential trilogy bout between Yan and Dvalishvili particularly compelling for UFC fans.
Dvalishvili's injury comes at a critical juncture, potentially delaying what could be a defining moment in his career. His willingness to compete with a compromised nose speaks to his fighter's mentality, but raises questions about his effectiveness against elite competition. The UFC community now watches closely to see how this development affects the bantamweight division's trajectory in the coming months.
