President Donald Trump was seen struggling with his chair at the G7 summit on Wednesday, leading to an awkward moment before Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney stepped in to offer his own seat. The incident occurred during a meeting with OpenAI's Sam Altman and Deepmind CEO Demis Hassabis.
Chair Malfunction Sparks Frustration
The gathering was intended as a discussion between world leaders and tech titans, but Trump commanded attention when he could not figure out how to raise his chair and adjust its height. The chair appeared too low for his liking, and he seemed unsure how to fix it. “Did you get it up?” Trump was heard asking, as his microphone remained on. He then tapped Altman's arm and gestured to the chair's mechanism, apparently seeking assistance.
Trump later remarked, “Look at yourself in a picture, and you say, 'What happened? What happened?' I had the lowest chair in the whole room,” according to reports from the Mirror US.
Carney Intervenes
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney stepped in, saying, “Donald, Donald, Donald. I've got the general's chair. You know what, it's the U.N.” He offered Trump his seat. Trump responded, “I'm kidding, I'm kidding. That's funny. That's very funny.” After taking Carney's seat, Trump said, “Oh, that's much better.”
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's reaction became a sensation as cameras captured her facial expression. Social media users suggested she appeared to “roll her eyes” or “suppress laughter.”
Aftermath and Iran Deal
Following the meeting, Trump traveled to Versailles to sign a memorandum of understanding between the U.S. and Iran to conclude the Middle East conflict. He signed the document at the dinner table, as reported by the BBC. Esmail Baghaei, spokesperson for Iran's Foreign Ministry, confirmed to Iranian state media that the agreement was signed by both Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.
Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif confirmed the signing in a post on X, stating it “shall enter into force with immediate effect and as a first step, Islamic Republic of Iran will instantly reopen the Strait of Hormuz and the United States of America will immediately lift the naval blockade.” Sharif added, “The signing of this agreement at the highest level of the respective governments demonstrates the commitment of both sides to a diplomatic resolution of the conflict,” according to The Hill.
