Donald Trump has recommended that Lindsey Graham's sister, Darline Graham Nordone, be appointed as interim senator to fill the remainder of Graham's term following his death on Saturday. Trump posted on social media urging South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster to select Nordone, describing it as a 'fabulous tribute' to the late Republican senator.
Trump's Endorsement and Governor's Response
In a statement on his social media platform, Trump wrote: 'I recommended, to Governor Henry McMaster, Lindsey Graham’s wonderful sister, Darline, to serve as interim Senator from the Great State of South Carolina. This would be a fabulous tribute to Lindsey, who loved her dearly!' The governor's office has announced a press conference for 4pm ET today to reveal his choice and to honor Graham's life and service.
Process for Filling the Vacancy
The appointed interim senator will serve until Graham's term expires in early January 2026. A special Republican primary is scheduled for 11 August to determine his permanent successor. This appointment is a critical step in maintaining South Carolina's representation in the Senate during the transition period.
