The death has been announced of Bob Brierley, a Wigan councillor who represented his community for decades. Coun Brierley, 67, was described in tributes from fellow councillors as a ‘dedicated’ and ‘passionate’ man who ‘served his constituents well for many years’.
A long career representing Hindley Green
He was a councillor for the Hindley Green ward for more than 20 years, originally representing the Community Action Party. He later sat as an Independent.
Coun Brierley was born in Platt Bridge and attended Moss Lane Junior School. He worked ‘on the buses’ for 10 years and later set up his own business as a saw doctor.
Charity work and community legacy
His charity work often saw him fundraising at the Three Sisters race circuit in Ashton. Money raised at these events was donated to many charities such as Riding for Disabled Children, Derian House and Whiz Kids.
Bob’s niece Lauren Howard published a loving tribute on Coun Brierley’s Facebook page. She said: “It is with the heaviest of hearts that we say goodbye to our beloved Uncle Bob Brierley.
“Uncle Bob loved nothing more than being surrounded by his family. He had a special place in his heart for his nephews and niece, and the time he spent with them meant so much. The memories, laughter, stories and moments shared together will be treasured forever.
“He was a much-loved uncle, family member son and brother and friend, and his loss leaves a huge hole in all of our hearts. You will be missed more than words can say.
“Thank you for all the love, laughter and memories. We will carry you in our hearts forever.”
Fellow councillors pay tribute
Fellow Hindley Green ward councillor James Palmer said: “It is with deep regret and sadness I announce the death of my ward colleague Coun Robert Brierley.
“A dedicated councillor of Hindley Green for over 20 years.
“I will share funeral details when shared by his family as I’m sure many residents will wish to attend. My thoughts are with all his family at this sad time.”
Atherton councillor Stuart Gerrard said: “Bob was a great community councillor who always put his residents first, something that should be a priority for all elected members.
“He was always active in his community, engaging with residents and even buying his own mowing machine to cut the grass to a good standard, much to the dismay of the council.
“Bob wore his heart on his sleeve and held the council to account on many occasions. He was never afraid to speak up when he disagreed with decisions made by the council.”
Constituent Tom Jackson also paid tribute. He said: “A proper Hindley Green man, who always had the concerns of his constituents at heart.
“A councillor who walked the walk and didn’t just talk the talk.
“I’m sure Bob will be up in heaven asking if they need the grass cutting.”
