Tiger Woods Missing from NFL-Backed Flag Football League Launch After DUI Arrest
TMRW Sports, the innovative sports entertainment company co-founded by golf legend Tiger Woods, has announced the launch of a new professional flag football league with substantial backing from the NFL. However, one prominent name was notably absent from Monday's official press release: Tiger Woods himself.
Celebrity Investors and NFL Backing
The yet-to-be-named league boasts an impressive roster of celebrity investors, including football icons Tom Brady, Eli Manning, Peyton Manning, Joe Montana, and Steve Young. Current NFL players such as Russell Wilson, Bobby Wagner, and Arik Armstead have also invested, alongside former players like Larry Fitzgerald and Justin Tuck.
High-profile female athletes are equally represented, with tennis stars Serena Williams, Billie Jean King, and Ilana Kloss joining soccer World Cup winner Alex Morgan as investors. The NFL is committing $32 million to the league through its investment vehicle, 32 Equity.
Tiger Woods' Conspicuous Absence
The omission of Tiger Woods from the announcement follows his arrest on Friday for allegedly driving under the influence. The 50-year-old golfer crashed and rolled his Range Rover on a residential road near his home in Jupiter, Florida. After crawling out of the passenger side window, Woods reportedly declined to provide a urine sample to officers and was arrested for DUI, property damage, and refusal to submit to a lawful test.
This incident likely explains why his name was excluded from the final edit of Monday's press release, despite his role as a co-founder of TMRW Sports alongside Rory McIlroy and Mike McCarley. The company is best known for creating the indoor golf league TGL.
Flag Football's Growing Momentum
The development of professional flag football leagues for both men and women comes at a pivotal time, as the sport has been adopted by the International Olympic Committee for the 2028 Los Angeles Games. Some NFL players have expressed interest in representing Team USA, but recent events suggest challenges ahead.
Last week, the American National Team defeated two squads composed primarily of NFL players during the inaugural Fanatics Flag Football Classic. Hall-of-Fame linebacker Luke Kuechly commented on the difficulty of adapting to flag football, noting, 'Our inability to put our hands on those guys made this game very difficult. The scheme is very different. The concepts are very different.'
When asked about potential Olympic roster selections, Tom Brady emphasized, 'Whoever gives the team the best chance to win should be out there.'
Strategic Vision and Future Prospects
The press release highlighted TMRW Sports' proven ability to leverage technology and new platforms, citing its successful venture with the TGL indoor golf league. NFL Executive Vice President of Football Operations Troy Vincent Sr. stated, 'As the flag football movement continues its explosive global growth, a professional flag league completes the pathway for elite athletes to compete at every level of the game.'
Vincent particularly emphasized the significance for female athletes, adding, 'This is especially meaningful for girls and young women who are helping drive the sport's growth worldwide and who can now see their dreams in this game extend all the way to the professional level.'
The league represents a strategic step in the NFL's long-term commitment to expanding flag football and supporting the athletes propelling its momentum forward.
