Cost of Living Crisis Hits Sports Fans Hard in 2026 with Soaring Ticket and TV Prices
Sports Fans Hit by Soaring Costs in 2026 as Ticket and TV Prices Skyrocket

Sports enthusiasts across the nation are facing a severe financial squeeze in 2026, as the ongoing cost of living crisis dramatically inflates the expenses associated with attending and watching live games. Comprehensive new research highlights that prices for match tickets and television subscriptions have skyrocketed, placing an unprecedented burden on fans' budgets.

Ticket Prices Surge Across Major Leagues

The most pressing concern for supporters is the sudden and substantial increase in match ticket costs, affecting both the National Rugby League (NRL) and the Australian Football League (AFL). According to detailed analysis conducted by the CT Group consultancy firm, NRL fans are experiencing the most significant impact, with family tickets for matches soaring by a staggering 37 per cent compared to the previous year.

NRL Fans Bear the Brunt

A group pass, which admits two adults and two children to the ground, now commands a price of $130. This represents a steep and concerning rise from the $95 charged in 2025, forcing many families to reconsider their attendance at live events.

AFL Supporters Also Feel the Pinch

AFL fans are similarly grappling with elevated costs. The price of grand final tickets has increased by at least $10 across every category, meaning the cheapest reserved seats are now being sold for $195. Furthermore, the cost of concessions at matches has risen, with a meat pie now more expensive and beer prices also climbing. Supporters are expected to pay a minimum of $12 for a beer in 2026, marking an increase of 50 cents from the previous year.

Streaming Services Hike Subscription Fees

The financial strain extends beyond the stadium gates, as avid followers are also being charged extra for watching matches on television. Kayo, a popular sports streaming service, recently increased the price of its premium subscription package by 12.5 per cent. The fee for the company's 4K two-user setup has escalated from $40.99 to $45.99 per month, a move that impacts a broad spectrum of sports enthusiasts.

A company statement addressed the change, noting, 'We have worked hard to ensure the monthly subscription for entry-level Kayo remains the same, ensuring our world-leading 50-sports live coverage remains accessible for sport fans.' However, this adjustment still places additional pressure on household budgets.

Broader Impact on Sports Viewing

Rugby union, Premier League, and tennis fans also faced financial challenges last year. Stan Sport, which broadcasts the Super Rugby season, the English Premier League, and various tennis events, implemented a substantial price increase of 33 per cent. This trend underscores a wider pattern of rising costs in the sports entertainment sector, exacerbating the difficulties posed by the cost of living crisis.

As these price hikes take effect, many fans are being forced to make tough choices about their engagement with live sports, highlighting the broader economic pressures affecting discretionary spending in 2026.
