NBA legend Shaquille O'Neal has announced the creation of Dunkman, a groundbreaking professional league dedicated solely to dunking, with a top prize of $500,000 for the world's best dunker. O'Neal, who executed approximately 4,000 dunks during his illustrious NBA career, including playoffs, revealed on Monday night that he will serve as the founder and inaugural commissioner of this innovative venture.
Building on Television Success
The Dunkman league aims to capitalise on the popularity of a television series of the same name, which aired last year. O'Neal stated that the league will expand upon the success of that six-episode series, transforming dunking from a sporadic contest into a structured professional sport.
Global Events and Broadcasting
In collaboration with TNT Sports, the Dunkman league will feature five live events: four group stage competitions followed by a championship finale. These events will showcase 24 dunkers from around the globe, competing for the title of world champion and the substantial cash reward. O'Neal emphasised, "These athletes are innovators and Dunkman is going to give them a global stage, real stakes, and a chance to build careers doing what they love. We are transforming dunking from a one-night contest to the fastest growing professional sport off two feet."
The league's broadcasts will be available across multiple platforms, including TNT, TBS, truTV, HBO Max, and various social media channels, ensuring widespread accessibility for fans.
