US Senator Marco Rubio has indicated that President Donald Trump's dissatisfaction with NATO will be a central issue at the forthcoming summit in Ankara, which he described as "one of the most important leaders' summits in the history of NATO." Speaking after a ministerial meeting in Sweden, Rubio thanked the host nation but quickly turned to the challenges ahead.
Trump's Disappointment to Be Addressed
Rubio stated that the Ankara summit would require NATO leaders to respond to Trump's "disappointment" regarding the alliance's "response to our operations in the Middle East." He emphasised that this matter would not be resolved at the ministerial level but would need to be discussed by the leaders themselves. "That will have to be addressed. That won't be solved or addressed today. That's something for the leaders level to discuss," Rubio said.
US Troop Deployments Under Review
While acknowledging the US announcement on Poland, Rubio noted that the United States continues to have global commitments that necessitate constant re-evaluation of force deployments. "This is not a punitive thing; it's just something that's ongoing, and it was pre-existing," he clarified.
Scope for Cooperation on Defence Industry
Despite the tensions, Rubio expressed optimism about the potential for collaboration with NATO on the defence industrial base. He highlighted that there is "plenty of scope to work with NATO" in this area, suggesting that the alliance can still find common ground on defence production and procurement.
The Ankara summit is expected to be a crucial test for NATO unity, with member states seeking to address US concerns while maintaining the alliance's collective defence commitments.
