Former collegiate swimmer Riley Gaines has challenged Democratic Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to a live debate after a heated exchange on social media. The feud began when Gaines accused Ocasio-Cortez of destroying the United States from within, alongside Senator Bernie Sanders and New York mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani.
Ocasio-Cortez responded with a personal jibe, suggesting Gaines would have placed higher in her swimming race if she had channelled her anger into swimming faster. This was a reference to Gaines tying for fifth place with transgender swimmer Lia Thomas, a result she has repeatedly criticised.
Gaines, now a conservative activist and supporter of President Donald Trump, hit back by calling Ocasio-Cortez a “misogynistic dunce” on X. She later appeared on Fox News’ The Ingraham Angle to issue a formal debate challenge, offering to defend capitalism, a biblical worldview, and the sanctity of life against what she termed Ocasio-Cortez’s socialism and support for abortion rights.
Ocasio-Cortez dismissed the challenge, telling Gaines to “get a real job”. Gaines retorted by pointing out that Ocasio-Cortez was effectively jobless due to the government shutdown, and emphasised that being a mother is a real job. She also shared supportive comments from other conservatives.
The spat highlights ongoing tensions over transgender athletes in sport, a topic Gaines has built her public profile on. This is not the first time Gaines has clashed with high-profile figures; earlier this year she exchanged words with Olympic gold medalist Simone Biles.
