Richard Keys Breaks Silence on Leaving Dying Wife for Daughter's Friend
Former Sky Sports presenter Richard Keys has publicly addressed persistent claims about his personal life, specifically his relationship with his new wife Lucie. The broadcaster, known for his role in Premier League coverage since 1992, has faced online criticism over his divorce from ex-wife Julia after 34 years of marriage.
Background and Career
Richard Keys became a household name in football broadcasting through his work with Sky Sports, where he fronted the Premier League launch in 1992 alongside Andy Gray. His career took a turn in 2011 when he left Sky Sports following the emergence of off-air sexist comments. He later reunited with Gray at BeIN Sports, where they have worked for the past 13 years.
Divorce and Allegations
Keys was married to Julia for 34 years before she filed for divorce in 2016, reportedly due to his alleged affair. This decision sparked controversy, as Julia had been diagnosed with thyroid cancer in 2008-2009. Critics on social media accused Keys of abandoning his wife during her illness. Additionally, claims surfaced that his new partner, Lucie, who is 31 years younger, was his daughter Jemma's best friend.
Keys' Response
In an interview with The Telegraph, Keys strongly denied these narratives. He stated, "What's damaging is that people presume I ran away with my daughter's best mate, locked her in a room, and gave her no choice about whether she wanted to be with me or not. All of which is nonsense." He described Lucie as a powerful and strong-minded individual passionate about women's rights, arguing that the claims unfairly target her.
Keys explained that he met Lucie, a lawyer working for the Qatar Investment Authority, at a golf event in Qatar. He said, "I never expected my marriage would end after 34 years, but Lucie bowled into my life and, wow, what a force of nature. And the rest is history." He also clarified that he did not leave Julia while she was dying of cancer, noting that she had undergone successful surgery years prior, and he chose not to discuss her health to maintain privacy.
Current Developments
It has been announced that Keys and Gray will leave BeIN Sports at the end of this season. Keys recently returned to England after departing Qatar following Iranian drone attacks. Despite the ongoing scrutiny, he remains focused on his career and personal life, dismissing what he calls unfair online commentary.
